LATINO EXCELLENCE IN ART, CULTURE & LITERATURE

The Profiles of Success Latino Excellence in Arts, Culture and Literature Award is given to an individual who has excelled in the field of the Arts and contributed a number of years toward Hispanic issues, giving their personal time and making a significant difference to the communities they serve.

Dr. Mónica Brown

Mónica Brown, PhD, is a professor of English at Northern Arizona University, specializing in U.S. Latino Literature and Multicultural Literature. Author of Gang Nation: Delinquent Citizenship in Puerto Rican, Chicano and Chicana Narratives and numerous scholarly articles, she was the recipient of the Rockefeller Fellowship on Chicano Cultural Literacies from the Center for Chicano Studies at the University of California. Dr. Brown is also an award-winning children’s author. She has written more than a dozen children’s picture books in both English and Spanish. Her award-winning books include Pablo Neruda: Poet of the People, winner of the Américas Award for Children’s Literature and an Orbis Pictus Honor for Outstanding Nonfiction and Waiting for the Biblioburro, a Christopher Award winner.

Dr. Brown’s interest in bilingual and multicultural education is rooted in her Peruvian-American heritage. As former co-chair of the Northern Arizona University Commission on Ethnic Diversity, she helped spearhead the proposal that resulted in the university’s global and U.S. ethnic diversity requirements.
