Moms of the Year 2018

Karen Bailey & Nelda Majors

Karen Bailey Nelda Majors

Karen Bailey and Nelda Majors are perhaps best known as the first gay couple to receive their marriage license in Arizona following the legalization of same-sex marriage. Their wedding, held at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Phoenix so that the public could attend, was the culmination of a 60-year relationship. They are mothers to their two adopted great great grandnieces. In the community, they are active advocates for marriage equality serving with both ONE Community, Lambda Legal, Human Rights Campaign in Phoenix, and Anti-Defamation League of Arizona’s Why “Marriage Matters” campaign. Karen and Nelda were lead plaintiffs in the lawsuit in the U.S District Court seeking to overturn Arizona’s ban on same-sex marriage, arguing that the ban violated the Constitution.
