What Is DBT?
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a form of talk therapy that helps people manage their actions and emotions to reduce negative, harmful, or self-destructive behaviors. This evidence-based therapy model focuses on teaching new skills and emotional regulation strategies. It's especially helpful in managing mental health conditions, such as:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Post-traumatic stress disorder
- Eating disorders
- Substance use disorder
- Borderline personality disorder
Trained therapists guide their patients through accepting who they are while recognizing a need for change in their behaviors. Through individual and group therapies, patients learn to track their emotions and identify the behavioral patterns that follow, allowing them to make real, meaningful changes.
While its effectiveness is backed by scientific evidence, DBT requires the full cooperation of the patient to work. Patients who aren't ready or committed to the process often don't see the same degree of success.
DBT may be right for you if:
- You're ready to make positive changes in your life.
- You're committed to all therapy sessions and homework assignments.
- You want to focus on the present and future.
- You feel comfortable committing to group sessions.
However, DBT isn't an overnight fix, and many people take 6 months to a year to complete the program. Some, particularly those with borderline personality disorder, may benefit from even longer treatment plans.
After completing the program, it's normal to still feel strong negative emotions from time to time. What matters is how you handle them. Remember, it's about making progress, not achieving perfection.
DBT Therapy and Treatment Includes:
At Valle del Sol, we use several treatment options to help patients of all ages. The primary components of our DBT program include:
- Group therapy: Patients attend two 2-hour group therapy sessions per week. During these sessions, patients build skills such as mindfulness, emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance.
- Individual therapy: Patients attend regular one-on-one therapy sessions where they receive personalized support. During these sessions, therapists guide patients through applying their newly learned DBT skills and help tailor treatment plans to their unique challenges.
- Pre-DBT services for children: Younger children can participate in a pre-DBT program to implement foundational skills, such as emotional awareness and regulation. This program sets the framework for a more traditional DBT experience as children mature.
