Learn About the Upcoming Changes

What you need to know about upcoming AHCCCS changes

AHCCCS is Arizona's Medicaid program, providing health coverage to eligible individuals and families. Under a new federal law, H.R. 1, certain AHCCCS members will face new requirements beginning in 2027.

Not everyone will be affected, and many people will qualify for exemptions. Understanding the changes now can help you prepare and avoid unnecessary disruptions to your coverage.

New work and community engagement requirements

Beginning January 1, 2027, certain adults enrolled in AHCCCS may need to demonstrate that they are participating in qualifying activities to maintain coverage.

Depending on your eligibility category, this may include:

  • Working or earning qualifying income.
  • Attending school or participating in an approved education or training program.
  • Volunteering or participating in another qualifying community activity.

Some people will be exempt from these requirements. Your eligibility category and individual circumstances matter, so it's important to understand which rules apply to you.

More frequent eligibility renewals

Certain AHCCCS members will also be required to renew their coverage every six months instead of annually.

This means it's especially important to keep your contact information up to date, watch for notices from AHCCCS and the Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES), and respond to requests for information by the deadlines provided.

Who will be affected?

The new requirements primarily target certain adults ages 19–64 enrolled in Medicaid expansion coverage who do not qualify for an exemption.

Children, pregnant individuals, people with disabilities, caregivers and other groups may be exempt from some or all of these requirements, depending on their circumstances and the applicable rules.

Not sure whether these changes apply to you? Valle del Sol can help you understand your options and identify the next steps to take.
